Ward 7 Newsletter - January 2024 - From Councillor Scott Xie

Dear Ward 7 Residents,

Happy New Year! We kicked off January with some exciting snowfalls and chilly days but this winter season in town will be more than just that. While many of us are working on our new year’s resolutions, get ready for more rapid developments taking place in our community. Here's a roundup of recent happenings and upcoming events in Oakville:

What’s Happening in Town

Oakville Moves Ahead to Expand Housing Options

In response to the increasing demand for housing here in Oakville and beyond, and the applicability of federal Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), Oakville Town Council has approved zoning amendments to allow up to four units per property town-wide. This move aims to address the housing supply crisis and make homeownership more accessible, affordable at an accelerated pace, especially for young adults. The proposed changes also include facilitating the construction of four-storey housing within an 800-metre radius of Sheridan College.

The Council is actively seeking public feedback on these amendments, and if successful, Oakville's application to the Housing Accelerator Fund could unlock up to $36 million in federal funding, creating over 1,000 new homes.

Read more on HAF and the Council’s housing strategy here.

Community Activation Grant program now available

Calling all community organizers! The Community Activation Grant program is now open for applications from interested organizers and entities. This initiative supports small-scale events, initiatives, and programs that contribute to the overall well-being of our community. From day one of my tenure, I have been working with stakeholders to enrich community engagement and to that end, we need to support grassroot community members to spearhead events and programs that will revitalize our community for all residents. With numerous efforts and support of the Council, This initiative is made possible to and now live. Visit the Community Activation Grant page for details.

Town Staff Seeking Feedback on IDEA Strategy

The Town of Oakville is committed to creating a more inclusive community and workplace. The draft Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Multi-Year Plan has been unveiled, outlining four key goals to foster inclusivity. The town encourages community feedback on the plan, with the deadline for submissions set for January 31, 2024. Read more here and share your thoughts by emailing Corporate Strategy Program Advisor Rebecca Brookes at rebecca.brookes@oakville.ca.
