Ward 7 Newsletter - November 2024 - From Councillor Scott Xie

Dear Ward 7 Residents,

As we approach the festive season, I’m excited to share some key updates and events happening in our community. From addressing environmental concerns to planning future developments and celebrating cultural events, there’s much to look forward to at Ward 7 and beyond.

New Parks, Recreation, and Library Master Plan Approved

The Oakville Town Council has approved a transformative Parks, Recreation, and Library Master Plan. This forward-thinking plan guides the town’s decision-making to enhance recreational opportunities, community wellness, and overall quality of life. It reflects our commitment to a sustainable environment and a thriving economy. From parks to libraries, this blueprint ensures Oakville remains a fantastic place to live.

Expansion of Automated Garbage Cart Collection

In short, it works -By June 2025, Halton Region will extend automated garbage cart collection to 18,000 additional homes. This initiative aims to improve waste management efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Public Information Centres will begin in February 2025, and garbage carts will be delivered in Q2 2025. Stay tuned for further updates as we transition to this improved system. Will your garbage pick-up be part of this expanded program? Check it out here.

Updated Noise Regulations in Oakville

Our Town Council has modernized the town's noise regulations, including lower decibel levels, consistent time limits, increased fines for construction noise, and updated guidelines for outdoor music on patios in business improvement areas until 10 p.m. The changes take effect April 1, 2025. Read about the new Noise By-law.

@Ward 7

Traffic Calming and Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian safety is a top priority, and I’m pleased to share that we’ve already installed five new Pedestrian Crossovers (PXOs) in Ward 7. These crossings require drivers and cyclists to stop for pedestrians, improving safety for all.

In 2025, we will be adding three more PXO locations:

  • George Savage Blvd and Hibiscus Gardens

  • Sarah Cline and Kaitting House Parkette

  • Sixteen Mile Dr and Gladeside Ave

These improvements will help make our community safer and more pedestrian-friendly. Thank you for your ongoing support as we work to enhance the safety of our neighbourhoods.

The traffic calming project along Sixteen Mile Drive, near Oodenawi Public School, is set to begin in summer 2025. We will be hosting a public consultation meeting in spring 2025 to gather community input and ensure the project meets the needs of our residents. Stay tuned.

Automated Speed Enforcement Program Launching January 1, 2025

As shared in the previous newsletter, Oakville will implement the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program starting January 1, 2025. ASE cameras are being installed in designated Community Safety Zones by December 2024, targeting areas where speeding is a concern. These cameras will play a critical role in reducing speeding and creating safer streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

The first 14 ASE camera locations include:

  • Colonel Williams Parkway: Stocksbridge Avenue/Richview Boulevard to Watercliffe Court

  • Rebecca Street: Sussex Street to Bronte Road

  • Old Abbey Lane: Montrose Abbey Drive to Milton Road/Northwood Drive

  • Nottinghill Gate: Runnymead Crescent (easterly intersection) to Beechgrove Crescent

  • Reynolds Street: Cornwall Road to Sumner Avenue

  • Kingsway Drive: Wynten Way/Winterbourne Drive to Prince John Circle/Sir David Drive

  • Westoak Trails Boulevard: Brookhaven Crescent/Arbourview Drive to Colbeck Street/Amberglen Court

These locations were carefully selected to address areas with increased safety concerns and ensure better compliance with speed limits. You may also find more details on how ASE works on our streets here.

This solemn event allowed us to reflect deeply on the incredible resilience and bravery of those who served in the defense of our freedom and peace. As we stood in silence, remembering those who gave their lives, we were reminded of the immense debt of gratitude we owe to the men and women who endured unimaginable hardships to protect the values we hold dear. From supporting vulnerable populations to fostering community growth and wellbeing, the showcased charities are a testament to the strength of Oakville’s collective spirit. Over $10,000 Raised for Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital

I joined MPP Stephen Crawford and Mayor Burton at the 3rd Oakville Chinese Realtor Association Gala to celebrate its successful fundraising of $10,000 to support the operation of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital.
