Ward 7 Newsletter - October 2024 - From Councillor Scott Xie

Dear Ward 7 Residents,

As the season turns and the holiday season approaches, our town is bustling with new updates, community events and opportunities for our residents to participate in shaping our neighbourhood. Here is a quick snapshot of what took place in October.

Mayor’s 2024 Policy Address

A great turnout of residents joined the Mayor’s 2024 Policy Address at Town Hall. The event highlighted key town initiatives and projects in the pipeline, from policy development to the draft 2025 budget. We invite more residents to engage in town planning, particularly in this year's budget, policy development, and project decisions, to make Oakville a place we all cherish. In his State of the Town Address, Mayor Burton requested a postponement of Distrikt Developments' Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) hearing on high-rise developments near Oakville GO station. Mayor Burton emphasized the town’s need for time to update Midtown policies, alongside adapting to the province's Transit-Oriented Communities (TOC) initiative.

The mayor’s address also highlighted a resurgence in transit ridership, Oakville’s partnership with Siemens Canada on wildfire prevention, and the town’s financial health. Mayor Burton, along with Ontario’s Big City Mayors, urged provincial and federal support to address homelessness and encampments across Ontario.

2025 Budget Proposal Open for Feedback

The Budget Committee has reviewed Oakville’s draft 2025 budget, including a proposed 3.92% property tax increase. For the average Oakville home assessed at $800,000, this means an approximate increase of $249.52 annually. Public input is essential, and you’re encouraged to participate through public delegations or emails. The budget will cover crucial services like road maintenance, fire safety, transit, and parks, with capital projects planned for parks, transit, and fire station renovations.

For more details and feedback opportunities, visit Oakville’s Budget Documents page.

Five-Year Transit Plan Approved

The Town Council has approved the 2025-2029 Transit Business Plan, which aims to expand and enhance transit to meet Oakville's growing needs. With a focus on reliability, accessibility, and increased service frequency, the plan aims to build a more robust transit network to support our community’s growth.

Stormwater Infrastructure Improvement Study

A feasibility study is underway to assess funding options for Oakville’s stormwater infrastructure, focusing on climate resilience. This initiative aims to ensure sustainable, long-term improvements to Oakville’s stormwater management system to protect our community from the impacts of climate change. As such, I encourage you to discover more on Oakville’s Stormwater Management.

Notice of Council’s Modifications to Official Plan Amendment (OPA) 322

On October 15, 2024, Town Council adopted a modified Official Plan Amendment (OPA) 322, which specifically exempts lands at 65, 71, 73, 83, and 89 Loyalist Trail from being classified as an "area of employment" under subsection 1(1) of the Planning Act. The plan, which aims to dismantle organized crime groups responsible for vehicle theft, has achieved progress with recent legislative amendments, enhanced intelligence sharing, and the increased use of scanning technologies at key locations like ports and railyards.
